Bhutan – The Last Himalayan Shangri-La

Bhutan β€” the Land of the Thunder Dragon and the world's only carbon-negative country β€” is a place unlike any other. Gross National Happiness is the national philosophy, and it shows in every smiling face, every immaculate dzong (fortress monastery), every fluttering prayer flag.

This 7-day journey takes you from the bustling capital Thimphu to the serene Punakha Dzong, the magical Paro Valley, and culminates in the iconic climb to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) β€” perched 3,000 feet above the valley floor on a sheer cliffside.

πŸ“‹ Bhutan Entry: Indian nationals do not need a visa for Bhutan, but require an entry permit. We arrange all permits. A Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100/night applies β€” this is included in our package.
Tiger's Nest (Paro Taktsang) β€” Bhutan's most iconic cliff monastery trek
Punakha Dzong β€” stunning 17th century fortress at river confluence
Thimphu β€” Bhutan's unique capital with no traffic lights
Memorial Chorten & Buddha Dordenma β€” Thimphu's iconic landmarks
Dochula Pass β€” 108 chortens with Himalayan panorama
Rinpung Dzong β€” magnificent fortress in Paro Valley

Itinerary

Pick up from Bagdogra Airport. Drive to Phuentsholing, the Bhutanese border town (3 hrs). Complete entry formalities and collect permits. Drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital (4 hrs through scenic mountain roads). Overnight Thimphu.

Full day in Thimphu:
β€’ Buddha Dordenma β€” 169-ft golden Buddha statue with stunning valley views
β€’ Memorial Chorten β€” circular stupa with constant prayer circumambulation
β€’ Takin Zoo β€” see Bhutan's unique national animal
β€’ Textile & Folk Heritage Museum
β€’ Thimphu Dzong (Tashichho Dzong) exterior
β€’ National Library & Painting School
Evening: Explore Thimphu's craft market. Overnight Thimphu.

Morning drive to Dochula Pass (3,100 m) β€” 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens with one of Bhutan's finest Himalayan panoramas on clear days. Continue to Punakha valley. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong β€” built in 1637 at the confluence of two rivers. Evening: Suspension bridge walk over the Mo Chhu river. Overnight Punakha.

Morning: Walk to Chimi Lhakhang β€” the temple of divine madman Drukpa Kunley, famous for fertility blessings. Afternoon: Drive to Paro (3 hrs), one of Bhutan's most picturesque valleys. Visit Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum (Paro Ta Dzong). Evening walk along Paro town. Overnight Paro.

The highlight of the entire journey! Trek to Paro Taktsang β€” Bhutan's most iconic site, clinging to a cliff face 3,000 feet above the Paro valley. The 2–3 hour uphill hike through pine forests rewards you with breathtaking views and a profound spiritual experience inside the monastery complex (where Guru Rinpoche reportedly flew on a tigress in the 8th century).

Return by mid-afternoon. Evening at leisure in Paro. Overnight Paro.

Explore Paro Valley at a relaxed pace. Visit Drukgyel Dzong (ruined fortress with Himalayan views), the ancient Kyichu Lhakhang (7th century temple, one of Bhutan's oldest), and traditional Bhutanese farm villages. Shopping for Bhutanese thangkas, prayer wheels and textiles. Farewell dinner. Overnight Paro.

Drive back to Phuentsholing and cross into India. Continue to Bagdogra Airport for your departure flight. Tour ends with the magic of Bhutan's happiness deeply embedded in your heart.

No, Indian nationals do not need a visa for Bhutan. You only need a valid Indian passport or Voter ID card for entry. However, a Bhutan Entry Permit is required, which we obtain on your behalf.

The Tiger's Nest trek is a moderately strenuous 2–3 hour hike (each way) gaining ~900 ft elevation. Most reasonably fit adults can do it with rest stops. Ponies are available for the first section if needed. Wear good walking shoes and start early morning.

Bhutan uses the Ngultrum (BTN), which is pegged at 1:1 with the Indian Rupee. Indian Rupee notes (β‚Ή10, β‚Ή20, β‚Ή50, β‚Ή100, β‚Ή200, β‚Ή500) are widely accepted. Keep β‚Ή2000 notes back β€” they are not accepted in Bhutan.

March–May (spring β€” rhododendrons bloom) and September–November (autumn β€” crystal-clear mountain views) are the best times. Thimphu Tsechu festival (Sep–Oct) is particularly spectacular. We can time your visit to coincide with local festivals.
